Chroma the Flash Prototype

January 2008. Team: Thomas Cheung, Jonathan Lo.

The Flash XML Reader: Sector Sort is one of my information design pieces. I may suggest to lower the volume for this piece.

The data parsed from the XML file is the 2008 class list of my university course provided by the professor.

My role in this project was to program and aesthetically design the information. The design chosen was to create a controlled data map similar to those in sci-fi movies. The class was separated into different sections, so the design must incorperate all the information in a visually logical and appealing way. Each section was divided into clusters of sectors on the map, which then can be isolated by using the navigation menu. Hexagon was the chosen shape to represent each person because it has multiple facets that can connect others hexagons in all directions.

This project was created during the early phases of ActionScript 3.0. Most of the graphics were done in house in Adobe Flash CS3. Little details were created in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for saving memory. The reader runs a for loop so for each tag inside the xml. Each hexagon is an object that constantly gets created for each "person" tag. The rest of the data in the "person" tag will define its section and matching color. The sound design can definitely be improved.
